What do you see when you look at a newborn baby, bright-eyed, gazing straight at you? Is there really a person there? Silently frowning or beet-red with rage, can this baby think and feel? For its small size, a newborn makes a powerful, compelling noise, but is it actually saying anything?
The truth is, much of what we have traditionally believed about babies is false. We have misunderstood and underestimated their abilities. They are not simple beings but complex and ageless, small creatures with unexpectedly large thoughts.

"Through the relatively new study of foetology, or prenatal psychology, excellently documented by Dr Thomas Verny in his book The Secret Life of the Unborn Child, we have understood at least since the 1970s that this imprint period starts almost from the moment of conception. Unborn babies are aware, are capable of learning and will strive to make sense of what they are feeling and experiencing.".......

In Marie Mongan's day, child birth meant a sterile, medicalized birth with drugs, and if you happened to be awake, lots of painful pushing.
"Most women were totally anesthetized and out cold, and their babies were taken from them with forceps, except for the very few who didn't make it to the hospital and had them by the side of the road," said Mongan, now 77.
So Mongan, then a young New Hampshire English teacher, devised her own way to circumvent the system when she had her four children in the late 1950s and 1960s.
She practiced a form of self-hypnosis, relaxing and imagining a calm birth, one that was painless.Today, the her method has a registered trademark -- HypnoBirthing -- and women in 34 countries, including celebrity mothers like Jessica Alba, Giselle Bundschen, Pamela Anderson, and "ER's" Noah Wyle's wife Tracy, have learned how to put mind over matter.
Actress Tiffani Thiessen of television's "Saved By the Bell" and "90210" has also just announced she will prepare for a HypnoBirth.
"We are very conscious of the mind-body connection and any approaches that can reduce the need for medication are a good thing," said Dr. Tracy Gaudet, an obstetrician and executive director of Duke University's Center for Integrative Medicine.

Kate Middlet on Consid ers Hypnobir th, But What Is It? For women – especially mothers who may need Cesarean (and the Duchess may be one of these), Katherine says that hypnobirthing can help women to feel like the birth is in their control, which some women don’t. She says: “The caesarean rate is approaching 30% and I don’t believe 1 in 4 women are getting to a state where they can’t give birth. Women who do hypnobirthing and who’ve had a caesarean say: 'Everyone was flapping around me but I was calm and felt in control. It was my birth it wasn’t just something that was one to me. Some women get post-natal depression largely because they feel like they’ve lost control.'" Gail Johnson, Professional Advisor (Education) at the Royal College of Midwives agrees and says: "Anecdotally, with hypnobirthing, women feel more in control and that is something that will help them with birth process. But, the evidence is hard because you don’t know what the labour would’ve been like without the influence of hypnosis. However, if women are following it and having a positive experience then that's a bonus." Read more here...... An expert tells Meera Murugesan that hypno-birthing helps calm mothers-to-be during labour.
Fear is the reason most women end up overly stressed and anxious during childbirth, explains Dr Tan Ee Ping, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at CT Woman & Child Specialist Clinic in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.
Dr Tan, a certified hypno-birthing practitioner, says it helps a woman to stay relaxed and focused during childbirth and is a pain management technique that can be used by all pregnant women.
Dr Tan says hypno-birthing also helps a woman to feel more comfortable during labour even without pain relief medicines or techniques.
“There are two moments when I see a woman calm during childbirth, one is with epidural and another with hypno-birthing.”

A philosophy designed to help women give birth naturally and without medical intervention, HypnoBirthing classes are experiencing a significant spike in popularity.
In fact, so many women are turning to self-hypnosis in the UK that midwives there believe that HypnoBirthing will be standard antenatal practice within the next ten years.
“HypnoBirthing is where water-birthing was 20 years ago."
"Back then it was considered a bit weird and there was a lot of scepticism from the medical community. But now every trust in the country does water births. Give it 10 years and HypnoBirthing will be standard antenatal practice. It’ll be mainstream.”
